In the beginning...
Patricia Ann Smith Kent was born in Claxton, GA on November 5,1948
to Roosevelt and Amanda Smith. The fifth of 12 children, she was an
obedient but strong-willed child. A certified country girl, Patricia loved
the outdoors. Determined to have more and he more, when she
graduated from Evans County High School, she moved to Savannah, GA.
Patricia attended Savannah State College and pledged Sigma Gamma
Rho Sorority, Inc. In 1971 she graduated from SSC with a degree in Food
Nutrition Management. It didn't stop there.
Yes. She did that and more...
Patricia received a T6 masters degree from Cambridge University and
completed doctoral courses at Walden University, both in the field of
Education. Although she briefly lived in Washington, DC, she called
Savannah, GA home. Patricia worked for the Chatham County Board of
Education as an Educator for 35 years, retiring in 2014. She was a Foster
Parent for over 15 years and received awards for exemplary service.
Patricia served the Southern District of the Association of the Church of
God as a registrar for 20 years. She was a majorette, licensed
cosmetologist, seamstress, choir singer, piano player, member of the
church Trustee Board, home decorator, nutritionist, potter and she even
spoke a little French.
We promise to make you proud...
On Saturday january 26, 2019 Patricia entered a state of eternal rest.
Waiting anxiously to see her again are the love of her life, Bernard, son
Al, daughter-in law Thurraya, daughter Berneta, and son-in-law
Winston. Longing for a hug are her grandchildren Malcolm, Matthias,
Kent and Devon. Missing her deeply are her brothers Roosevelt Jr., Joel
Eddie, George, and Weldon, and her sisters Carrie and Donna. Thinking
about the good times are brothers-in law, sisters-in law, nieces,
nephews, cousins, friends, colleagues, and goddaughter Tre. And
heartbroken are her good giggling girlfriends, Gwen, Iona, Gladys and
Margie.

"I had a lot of memories with
Grandma. We would go out and
have dinner with Grandma. It
made me happy because I got to
spend time with her. She would
always tell me education was
very important and her advice
will help me get into college. She
gave me lots of snacks and gave
me lots of oatmeal because she
knew that oatmeal was my
favorite. Grandma gave me stuffed animals I would use when times got
tough. We even went on a cruise together. I have lots of happy
memories with Grandma. I will miss her but I am happy that she is in
heaven." Malcolm, Grandson
"She was always giving my kids something. Corey wanted a cat and I
wouldnt get him one because I dont like cats. She gave him a stuffed
cat, Larry Soft Paws. He still has it. Jennifer, Niece
You were so witty and had the quickest and BEST comebacks Ive ever
heard. You also took me in when 1 was a handful for everyone else. I love
and respect you for that. Marcus, Nephew

"Mommy, you and I are a functioning dysfunctional pair. We can argue at 2pm
and laugh at YouTube Videos at 2:05pm. We are so different, me being
adventurous and all over the place; you being a home body and settled. But we
are alike in our love of Popeyes chicken, fried okra, and Coke Icees. You are the
most creative person I know and my home would have no character if not for
I you. I love the arts, music, and dance, because you introduced me to them. From
you, 1 received a servant spirit.; you never say no. You taught me humility, to
never look down on people, to treat everyone as an equal. I always say you are a
hoarder, but if 1 am honest, when 1 need something, an}h;hing, you always have
it; no matter how random it is. But time, is the one thing we didnt get enough of.
Mommy, I'm not yet done being your daughter. Berneta
"My mother-in-law was a regal woman who carried herself with class. She
reminded me of an M&M; hard exterior hut sweet inside." Winston, Son-in-
Law
Grandma would always play fight with us. She said if bad people ever came into the
house, we would be ready. Kent, Granddaughter
I love when Grandma let me sleep in her bed."
Devon, Granddaughter

Pat was a calm spirit. She and her brother Fred should have been twins
because they were so similar. Calm and strong. Cynthia, Sister-in-Law
"I can hear Kent laughing and saying, 'Pendergraph, I beat you up
here'. Yeah, she's happy. I know it. Margie, Friend
"Sis. Pat was a strong motivator of me finishing my studies. She
challenged me and made me laugh at the same time. She would say, 1
started mine and stopped so you go on and finish. 1 tried to get her to
finish but she would say, 'Im getting ready to retire. So as for me, Im
done. 1 picked at her about switching places and we had a good laugh."
Rev. Del, Pastor
"ds a child I would visit Savannah in the summers. She would do my hair
and I felt as if I lived there." Chandra, Niece
