~ The T)ash ~
I read of a man who stood to speak
^t the funeral of a friend.
He refeiTed to the dates on his tombstone
J^rorn the beginning to the end.
He noted that first came the date of his binh,
^nd spoke the following date with tears,
^ut he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between those years.
J^or that dash represents all the time
That he spent alwe on eaiih,
^0nd nou'^ only those who loved him
JCnow what that little line is wonh.
J^or it matters not, how much we own;
The cars, the house, the cash.
\Klmt matters is how we lived and loved
^nd how we spend our dash.
So think about this long and hard,
^re there things youd like to change?
J^or you never know how much time is left.
That can still be rearranged.
If we could just slow down enough
To consider udiats true and real
^nd. always try to understand.
The way other people feel.
^0nd be less quick to anger',
^nd show appr'eciation tnor'e
^nd love the people in our lives
Tike weve never loved before.
If we Weat each other with r'espect,
^nd rnor^e often wear a smile
I(emembering that this special dash
Misht onlu last a little while.
So, when your eulogy is being read
With your lifes actions to r'ehash.
Would you be pwud of the th ings they say
Jibout how you spent your dash?
/must irork the works of him that sent me, irTiile it is dai/:
the night comet/?, irdien no man can irork John 9:4

Time to be Educated
Time to J^ve
jlfter the unfonunate death ofMaiy JCees mother, her father found lov>e and
manied her God-gwen mother, &der Mattie ^acon who also preceded her in death.
This mariiage was a blessing for Maty and her siblings, because now there were more
hands to help care for the young siblings. She was then able to begin to pursue and
' build a life for herself. In 1954, Maty Xge manied the lope of her life, JCeland ^yrd, Sr.,
a soldier in the U.S.^rrny. She happily followed him on all of his militajy
assignments. They lived in^aska, Germany, Seattle Washington, jfewJersey,
