OBITUARY
Earlean Elizabeth Gulley Bailey departed this life on
Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at Ogeechee Hospiee in Statesboro,
GA. She was bom in Greenville, AL on June 17, 1924, the daughter
of William Gulley and Lela Dunklin Gulley. She was preceded in
death by her husband of sixty-seven years, Charles L. Bailey (C.L.);
her parents; three sisters and two brothers: Amy Lee Caldwell, Anna
Joan Davison, Lela Pearl Ogletree, William, and Donald; and by her
granddaughter Marona Graham-Bailey.
Earlean grew up as a member of Butler Chapel AME Zion
Church in Greenville and joined Thomas Grove AME Church in
1946. She was educated in the public schools of Butler County, AL
and at the high school affiliated with Stillman College in Tuscaloosa,
AL. In 1946, she graduated from Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee
University) with a degree in Home Economics. She received a
Masters degree in Education fi-om Savannah State University.
On June 29, 1947, Earlean was united in Holy Matrimony to
Charles Bailey of Claxton, Georgia. They met by chance in
Montgomery, AL. Earlean was a student at Tuskegee and C.L. was
stationed at Fort Benning, GA. They met at a jazz concert featuring
the big band of Jimmie Lunceford, and the rest is history. To this
union three children were bom: Ronald, Cynthia, and Linell.
Earlean led an active life as a wife, mother, church member,
educator, and community servant-leader. She taught in Evans County
for almost 40 years and was teacher of the year in 1965-66. She was
a member of the -Tuskegee & Savannah State alumni associations;
Georgia Association of Retired Educators, NAACP; Gladiettes;
American Cancer Society, Afro-American Society, the A.M.E.
Womens Missionary Society, and held local and regional offices in
Sweet Evening Breeze #209 of the Order of the Eastern Star and
Golden Circle.
Family and fnends will cherish loving and lasting memories
of Earlean Bailey. They include her children, Ronald (Saundra),
Cynthia, and Linell (Marcyline); grandchildren Malika Graham-
Bailey, Jonathan D. McBride, Robeson Graham-Bailey, Ranee
Graham-Bailey, Adiah L. Bailey, and Anja N. Bailey; and many
Gulley & Bailey family friends scattered across the globe.

To honor Mrs. Baileys commitment to education, the
family is requesting that contributions be sent to provide
scholarships for students in Evans County. Contributions

The family would also like to acknowledge the many
expressions and acts of condolence offered to comfort us as
we mourn the loss of Earlean Gulley Bailey. We are
especially grateful to her caretakers and the many
healthcare professionals who served her.
