Obituary
Alberta Ball was born on February 23, 1923 in Portal, Georgia, the
fifth child of John and Dora Greene where she was a faithful
member of Scarboro Grove Baptist Church. She passed away
peacefully July 11, 2015 at Arbor Terrace of Cascade under the
loving care of Heritage Hospice as her health declined. She was
preceded in death by her parents; a sister Carolyn Lewis; three
brothers: John Cullen Greene, James Greene, and George Greene;
her husband. Deacon Warren Harden Ball; and her sons: Theodore
Ball and Roland Ball.
Alberta was united in holy matrimony with the late Deacon Warren
Harden Ball on August 21, 1946 and to this union four children
were born: Vivian, Theodore, Roland, and Euris. She moved her
membership to Jerusalem Baptist Church where she was Mother of
the Church, founded the Sunbeam Choir, and worked diligently to
honor others.
A wife, mother, educator, and devoted church worker, Alberta
always put her family first. Her love of music and performing arts
inspired others. She loved arranging flowers, sewing, and tending
her garden. She enjoyed collecting recipes and looked forward to
family gatherings to share her culinary delights. She always
thought of others in their time of need.
Active in her community, Alberta was a founding member of the
Jolly 12 Christmas Savings Club, a member of the Eastern Stars, and
the Georgia Retired Teachers Association. Her dramatic
performance of the Paul Laurence Dunbar poem, "When Malindy
Sings," during Black History celebrations was a treat to behold.
Alberta attended Savannah State College (now University) and
received a bachelor degree in Elementary Education. She taught
first grade for several years at Evans County schools.
She leaves a loving family to cherish her memory: daughters Vivian
B. Randolph and Euris E. Belle of Atlanta; a sister Evelyn Burke of
Detroit, Michigan; sisters-in-law Avis B. Hagan of Atlanta, Clara
Lou Greene of Portal, and Gwendolyn Cooper of Dothan, Alabama;
five grandchildren Dravious Ramon Mincey, Royal Randolph, III
(Dr. Adriane), Dr. Valdesha Ball DeJean (Dr. Gerald), Maurice
Warren Belle, and Brandon Delond Ball; three great-grandchildren
Lorenzo Merritt, Royal Randolph, IV, and Addison Brooke
Randolph; Ann English; Rubye Harris Ball; godson Albert Randall
Baker; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A Favorite Poem...
"Mother to Son"
by Langston Hughes
Well, son. I'll tell you:
Life for me ain't been no crystal stair.
It's had tacks in it.
And splinters.
And boards torn up.
And places with no carpet on the floor --
Bare.
But all the time
I'se been a-climbin' on.
And reachin' landin's.
And turnin' corners.
And sometimes goin' in the dark
Where there ain't been no light.
So boy, don't you turn back.
Don't you set down on the steps
'Cause you finds it's kinder hard.
Don't you fall now
For I'se still goin', honey,
I'se still climbin'.
And life for me ain't been no crystal stair.

It is in loving,
not in being loved
the heart finds its quest;
It is in giving,
not in getting
our lives are blessed.
