Mrs. Gwendolyn Henley Strickland was born in Claxton, Georgia on December 14,
1920 to the late Mr. Robert and Mrs. Novella Gay Henley. Mrs. Strickland resided in Claxton
until her death on December 28, 2003 at Evans Memorial Hospital.
She was married on June 16,1940 to Mr. Leamon H. Strickland, Sr., who preceded
her in death. To this union, five children were born, all of whom she adored and loved dearly.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her daughter, Mrs.
Carole Flowers, and a brother, Mr. George Rex Henley, preceded her in death.
Mrs. Strickland received her early education in the Evans and Bulloch County public
school systems. She received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Savannah State
University, and was an active member of its alumni association. She touched the lives of many
children as an educator in the Evans County school system for thirty-three years, and loved
each of her students as if they were her own. She also served as secretary of the Bryan/Evans
County Retired Teachers Association.
Mrs. Strickland was a loyal member of the St. John Missionary Baptist Church where
she worked diligently as the church secretary and clerk, and also as Sunday School and Vaca-
tion Bible School Teacher, and was also active in many other worthy causes. She was a mem-
ber of Sweet Evening Breeze No. 269 of the Order of Eastern Star, and Eva J. Moore Assembly
#348 Order of The Golden Circle.
Toss", as she was fondly called by her family and friends, was quiet and gracious, as
well as a loving and compassionate woman who acknowledged the best in everyone.
She leaves the following loved ones behind to cherish her loving memory: four de-
voted sons: Mr. Leamon Strickland, Jr. (Diane) of Kingstowne, Virginia, Mr. William Strickland
(Linda) of Durham, North Carolina, Mr. Anthony Strickland (Gloria) of Suffolk, Virginia, and Mr.
Stanley Strickland of Claxton, Georgia; one brother, Mr. Robert Henley, Jr. (Geneda) of Louisville,
Georgia; three sisters-in-law: Ms. Eddie Pearl Strickland, Mrs. Margie Rumph, and Mrs. Leona
Williams; one aunt, Mrs. Bernice Macon; six grandchildren: David Strickland, Carole Strickland,
William Strickland, Mitchell Flowers, Latoya Burney, and Andrea Morgan; one great-grandchild,
Javieon Palmer; and many loving and caring nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
