OBITUARY
Mrs. Emma Lee Oxendine, the daughter of the late Mr. Henry Washington
and Mrs. Addie Herrington Washington, was bom March 24, 1921 in Tyson,
Georgia. She was one of the seven children bom to this union. She departed this
life on Thursday, April 9, 1998 in Savannah, Georgia.
At an early age she joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Tyson. In June of 1947
she was joined in Holy Matrimony to Calvin F. Oxendine, Sr. After marriage
and relocation to Evans County, she affiliated with Thomas Grove A.M.E.
Church where she served actively involved in all areas to include the
Stewardess Board and Missionary Society. She was a class leader as well as a
Pastors Aide. She was a Gladiette and a member of Sweet Evening Breeze,
Chapter #269 O.E.S. As a beautician she served the community for 43 years.
She retired from this career in 1992.
She leaves to cherish her memory, a loving, caring, and devoted husband. Rev.
Calvin F. Oxendine, Sr., Claxton,Ga., one daughter, Mrs. Carolyn O. Dunston,
Claxton, Ga., two sons, Mr. Calvin F. Oxendine, Jr., Claxton, Ga., and Mr.
Samuel L. Washington, Sr., who has proceeded her in death. One son-in-law,
Mr. Richard L. Dunston, Sr., Claxton, Ga., one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Jannie
Ruth Washington, Syracuse, New York, twelve grandchildren, Ms. Yolanda L.
Gunn, Kissimmee, Fla., Mr. Richard L. Dunston II, Mr. Calvin F. Oxendine, III,
both of Claxton, Ga., Mr. Kelvin A. Oxendine, Statesboro, Ga., Mr. Jarius
Oxendine, Raleigh, NC, Mr. Calvin L. Murray, Belle Glade, Fla., Mr. Samuel L.
Washington, Jr., Reidsville, Ga., Mrs. Judy B. Scott, Claxton, Ga., Mr. Joseph
A. James, deceased, Mr. James D. Washington, and Ms. Sandra R. Washington,
both of Syracuse, NY, Ms. Alice Bacon, Maryland, twenty great-grandchildren,
and two great-great grandchildren, one niece, who was like a sister, Mrs. Mary
Porter, Glennville, Ga., and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, and other
relatives and friends.
Toil on a little longer here,
For thy reward awaits above,
Nor droop in sadness or in fear
Beneath the rod thats sent in love;
The deeper wound our spirits feel.
The sweeter heavens balm to heal.
Faith lifts the veil before our eyes.
And bids us view a happier clime.
Where verdant fields in beauty rise.
Beyond the withering blasts of time;
And bring the blissful moment near,
When we in glory shall appear.
Then let us hope; tis not in vain;
Though moistened by our grief the soil.
The harvest brings us joy for pain,
The rest repays the weary toil;
For they shall reap who sow in tears.
Rich gladness through eternal years.
