OBITUARY
Rev. Melvin C. Smith, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs.
Henry Smith was born in Tattnall County, Georgia, on Oct.
19, 1888. His Christian life came to a close Saturday, June
10, 1972, at 3:00 P. M., at the Evans Memorial Hospital,
Claxton, Georgia.
He was converted and baptized at an early age. His en-
tire life was devoted to the Word of God, preaching and
teaching it wherever he went. He was united in Holy Matri-
mony to the late Miss Sally Brown in 1909. Unto this union
was born 13 children. In 1938 he was left a widower with
young children and remained so until September 1, 1940,
when he was united in Holy Matrimony to Evelyn Swinson,
who helped him rear his family.
He was ordained a Minister and served as Assistant at
Steep Hill Missionary Baptist Church for many years. Rev.
Smith was a faithful member of this Church and at his
death was the oldest member on the rolls.
In December, 1949, he moved to Claxton, Georgia, to
live. He attended Churches in that community, but he re-
mained a dutiful member of Steep Hill and attended ser-
vices regularly until his health forced him to slow down his
pace. He was a religious man and an inspiration to talk to
on any subject, his favorite being the Bible and the right
way to live in order to meet our Saviour. His life reflects
his beliefs.
Rev. Smith leaves to mourn a loving and devoted wife,
Mrs. Evelyn Smith; 4 sons and 6 daughters, Mrs. Tona Wil-
liams, Savannah, Ga., Mrs. Fronita Moore, Stillmore, Ga.,
Mr. T. J. Smith, Bronx, N. Y., Mrs. Adgnoe Bradshaw, Miami,

Y., Mrs. Arlivla Hamlin, Baltimore, Md.; 38 grandchildren;
37 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren and a

Sleep on Rev. Smith and take your rest.
We all loved you well but Jesus loved you best.
In the shadow of his wing
There is rest, sweet rest
There is rest from care and labor
There is rest from friends and neighbors.
In the shadow of his wing
There is peace, sweet peace
Peace that passeth understanding
Peace, sweet peace that knows no ending.
In the shadow of his wing
There is joy, glad joy
There is joy to tell the story
Joy exceeding full of glory.
