OBITUARY
Mr. S. J. Harper was born in Jenkinville, S. C. September 6, 1873 to
the late Rev. J. S. W. Harper and Mrs. Mary Martin Harper. He came
to Evans County as a young man and through his thrift and the help of
his companions was able to establish Harpers Grocery Store, and in later
years, Harpers Funeral Home. He was known all over the State of Gecr-
gia and amassed many friends from other states.
He joined Thomas Grove A.M..E. Church as a young man, and was
one of the founders, his name appears on both cornerstones, he was a faith-
ful member, a class leader, trustee and superintendent of the Sunday School
Dept, until his health failed and he was unable to attend. He departed
this life at his home about 7:30 oclock Saturday night, January 8, 1967,
after a long illness.
He had no children of his own, but became father to many of his sisters
children who thought of him as their own father and loved his as such.
He leaves to mourn a devoted wife, Mrs. Maggie (Sula) Harper; a
faithful son, Mr. Willie B. Harper, Claxton, Ga.; four daughters, Mrs.
Andrew Lee Baker and Mrs. Carlee Carter, Washington, D. C., Mrs. Ruby
Thomas and Mrs. Doris Lawson, Newark, N. J. Sons, Mr. Cartz Fant and
Mr. Fred Fant, Washington, D. C.; sister, Mrs. Ellen Lightner, Morristown,
N. J.; brother. Rev. T. E. Harper, Philadelphia, Pa.; three daughters-in-law,
two sons-in-law, many grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
Help us, loving Father, to bear bravely the burden of bereavement which
weigh upon our hearts. May the grief over the death of our loved one not
suffocate the gratitude we owe, for the many years of life we shared to-
gether.
Thou hast created us with a wisdom which we can only partially under-
stand. If it is thy law that the joy of love is followed by the pain of parting,
teach us to accept our sorrow as a spiritual coin with which we pay in
part for the blessings of love. Help us to understand that the death of the
body make way for the everlasting life of the soul.
Abide with us in the valley of the shadow. Let us place our troubled
souls in thy dear enfolding arms. When we cannot see our way. Let us
trust still and obey.
