Sir,
In reply to your letter of the 8th inst. [instant] I have the honour [honor] to inform you, that no rolls of any company of Cherokee, or other Indians, commanded by you in the year,
1838, can be found among the records of this office. And the enclosed letter from the 2d [2nd] Auditor, will assure you, that, though none such have been discovered in his office, yet if you will furnish him with the name of the Paymaster, by whom they were paid, as you State, he will cause a further examination to be made.
