State of N Carolina Haywood County}
this day personally appeared before John L Dilliard Esqr [Esquire] a justice of the peace for said County, Joseph Keener of said County & after being duly sworn deposith [added text: & saith ] that he aided as Clerk in the store for William H Thomas in the years,
1835 &
thirty six & in Pursuance of the Instructions of the said Thomas aided his other Clerk J.W. King & furnished a great many poor Cherokee Indians with provisions & Clothing which were Charged at the usual rates of such articles in this Country at that time & at the same rates which his white Customers were Charged this deponant [deponent] was present when said Thomas agreeable to previous notice met the Cherokees to know if the destitute had been furnished & it was then agreed uppon [upon] that three Dollars for Each individual of the several families was sufficient to supply their wants, which amt [amount] was furnished by said Thomas deponant [deponent] was well acquainted with said Thomas merchantile [mercantile] transaction both with Indians & whites (being ther [there] & several years previous in his employ as Clerk) and so far as they Can to his deponent knowledge they were Strictly Honest
