Fort Hawkins
3rd. of Novr. [November] 1814.
I arrived here last evning [evening] from the agency and this morning received the enclosed communication express from thence. I shall return there as soon as the mail of tomorrow arrives and proceed immediately to collect the friendly Indians as fast as I can to aid in chastising this hostile party. Orders have been issued for the enroling [enrolling] of the Indians some time past, and is in execution. The friendly towns are in a state of alarm which they have expressed to me by runners.
I shall make Cowetau my head quarters and act from thence as circumstances may require I shall order all the Uchees to embody under Capt. Barnard and station them 20 miles below Fort Lawrence I shall give a like order to the Chiefs of Aumuccullee to remain 30 miles [unclear text: still ] lower to reconnoiter the movement of the enemy. From Cowetau I can defend the posts, which it is desirable they should attack in preference of your fronteirs [frontiers] . If the militia officers in the agency will cooperate under my command with a little aid from you we will soon make the enemy retrace his steps with loss. I shall want 100 mounted infantry. It is bad policy and will never do to act defensively against Indians on a fronteir [frontier] as extensive as yours. On the appearance of hostility they must be traced up to their towns and crushed. The reason is favourable [favorable] and what provision they have made is ready for us. As they have [illegible text] hostility and made a movement towards us, If the Chiefs of Aumuccullee should prevail on them to desist it will be but temporary as the British force will be ready to act with them. we had better begin and act with effect against them

You have had a call on you for so many of your Militia lately, that I have brought my [unclear text: mind ] to act with the least possible force, otherwise, I prefer as the occasion requires it, and should call on you for at least 500 mounted men under an officer of ability, to go with our United force, and crush those people. It would be very agreeable to me to hear you [unclear text: concur ] in and can take order on this last idea.
I have the honor to be Very respectfully Dear Sir your ob Servt. [obedient Servant]
