- Colonel W.M. Benton who commands a regiment of Georgia militia offers his services and those of his men to the commander of forces in Florida and Alabama through Major General William W. Montgomery. Benton states that his troops are eager to assist their friends in Florida, and he is in readiness to be called to command a regiment in Florida or in the Creek Nation in Alabama. The "Florida Expedition" ostensibly refers to the Second Seminole War (1835-1842).

The Staff under my command being desirous of taking their chances in the relief of our suffering friends in Florida as well as my [deleted text: own ] self [deleted text: [illegible text] ] -- we therefore tender to you & through you to the commander of the forces in Florida or Alabama my services & pledge myself & staff to be in readiness at any moment we may be called on to take command of any Regiment wanting a commander at any place designated in Florida or Creek nation in Alabama
