Description:
This is a petition from John E. Smith dated December 2, 1789 at Augusta. Smith, who performed printing services for the state in 1789, includes with his petition a detailed financial account of all services rendered and the value of those services in both specie and the paper medium. Among the documents that Smith printed were copies of talks given to the Creek Indians by state commissioners, lists of military expenditures, and copies of a letter from Creek leader Alexander McGillivray to John Galphin. The back of the petition is signed by auditor John Wereat, who finds Smith's financial records to be in good order.

To the Honorable the Speaker and Members of the House of Representatives of the State of Georgia --
The Petition of John Erdman Smith Printer to the Said State
Respectfully Sheweth

That your Petitioner has inclosed [enclosed] his Account with the State for the present year in two Separate Statements -- one in paper medium, as the business charged for, being antecedent to the present arrangements, it may, perhaps, be conceived the proper [deleted text: mode ] mode of payment -- the other in Specie, in hopes that the Legislature will coincide therein, and no longer subject him to the inconveniencies [inconveniences] he has felt in past payments; the greater part of his last year's Account being paid him in the month of
August, when -- Medium could purchase no article vendable in the markets which he is obliged to resort to for Paper, &c. [et cetera] and caused him to labour [labor] under great difficulties to carry on his business. --
Your Petitioner hopes, that, among the appropriations by Law which are about to be made for the current year, he will not be left out; that he may have it in his power to do the business of the State with credit and dispatch; and your Petitioner will ever pray, &c [et cetera] .

[Signed] John E. Smith
