War Department
February 18 : 1841
Sir,
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letters of the
28th. ultimo and
5th. instant.
From the accompanying copy of an order from the Adjutant General's Office you will learn that directions have been given for re-mustering the troops in the Okefenokee district for the further term of six weeks. At the expiration of that period it is confidently hoped, from the present favorable aspect of affairs throughout Florida, that their services will no longer be needed.
The department has no means at its disposal that would authorize it in calling into the service an additional force to be stationed at Fort North, and from present appearances Congress will appropriate no more than will be barely sufficient for the compensation of the force now employed. A copy of your letter relating to the representations of the citizens, of frequent Indian alarms in that neighborhood, will be sent to General Read, whose attention will be called to the subject, and who will, doubtless be able, from the force under his command to afford the necessary protection to the citizens.

With respect to the claims for forage, subsistence, transportation &c [et cetera] on account of Major Brown's battalion, Capt. [Captain] Babbitt, of the Quarter Masters department, is now at Trader's Hill collecting and examining them for the purpose of settlement. The Surgeon of the battalion was not paid because his name was not on the muster roll. Evidence of the Commanding Officer must be furnished showing the cause of this omission, together with his certificate, clearly stating the fact that he was actually attached to the troops as a medical officer and faithfully performed his duty as such; and exhibiting likewise the actual period of his service.

Very respectfully Yr mo obt Serv [Your most obedient Servant]
[Signed] J. [Joel] R. Poinsett
His Excellency Charles J. McDonald Governor of Georgia Milledgeville Georgia
