War Department
September 5th 1840
Sir
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your communication of the 29th ulto [ultimo] and its inclosures [enclosures] . The recent outbreak and ravages of the Indians in the vicinity of the Suwannee and the Georgia frontier, is a matter of inexpressible regret to this Department, and I hasten to inform you that orders have been sent to Colonel Twiggs to have mustered into the service the two companies of militia of General Hilliard's brigade, which you have called out for the purpose of affording protection to the citizens in the neighborhood of those outrages, and of preventing the Indians from passing into the Okeefenokee Swamp. Colonel Twiggs has likewise been directed to take the necessary measures for the subsistence of the companies. By a dispatch just received from that officer, I am informed that, on hearing of the outrages, he promptly pushed forward all his disposable force, with a view of checking the Indians and affording protection to the inhabitants.
The Paymaster General has been instructed to

[Signed] J. [Joel] R. Poinsett
