War Department
May 15th 1840 --
Sir,
I have the honor to transmit, herewith, for the information of your Excellency, extracts from a report from General Taylor dated the 14th ultimo, and from its enclosures, from which it will be seen that the representations made to you on the subject of the retreat of [deleted text: [illegible text] ] Indians from Florida into the Okefenokee Swamp, and which you have heretofore communicated to this Department, were without foundation.
It appears from a report from General Taylor, dated a short time previous, that the force in the vicinity of the swamp is judiciously stationed, and is ample for the protection of the citizens of that part of the country, and also that great vigilance [vigilence] is observed on the part of the Officers in command of it to prevent the Indians from making their way into the swamp from Florida, and from committing depredations upon the property of the citizens.
Very respectfully
yr mo obt Serv [your most obedient Servant]
[Signed] J. [Joel] R. Poinsett
His Excellency Charles J. McDonald Govr. [Governor] of Georgia Milledgeville Georgia
