His Ex. [Excellency] Wm [William] Schley,
Sir,
The House of Representatives of the U.S., on
1. July last, resolved "that the memorial of certain citizens of Alabama and Georgia, respecting alleged frauds in the purchase of the reservations of the Creek Indians and the causes of their present hostilities, be referred to the President of the United States, and that he be requested to cause such measures to be taken for investigating these [deleted text: [illegible text] ] transactions, and for the prosecution of the persons engaged in them, who may have been guilty of any breaches of the laws, as may appear to be proper, and within the power of the Executive." We have been selected, [deleted text: by ] under this resolution, by the President to conduct the inquiries contemplated by it. In the discharge of an all important branch of our duty, it is our hope and Expectation to be much aided by your Excellency. Your high [deleted text: [illegible text] ] official position must necessarily, prior to and in the early stages of the recent Creek hostilities, have opened [deleted text: to ] widely to you all the sources of information in respect of the causes of those hostilities, and possibly of some of the persons who may have been active in inciting the savages to the commission of atrocious acts -- and your letters to the War Department show that your attention was anxiously directed to the existing state of things along the Chattahoochee during the past spring. Will you be so obliging as to communicate to us as fully as your means of information, and sense of propriety and duty, will allow, your views of the causes that moved the Creeks to hostilities, together

with the facts upon which those opinions may be founded. We could apply to no higher source, nor, of any degree so likely to yield information. Please address your reply to us at Columbus, Georgia.
In the course of the autumn we shall do ourselves the honor of making you an official visit in person, in regard of the duties with which we are charged.
