Qr.Mr. Gen's [Quarter Master General's] Office Washin [Washington] City
July 3d. [3rd] 1836.
Sir-
I enclose to you herewith an extract from a letter from the Gov. [Governor] of Georgia to the Secr'y [Secretary] of War, dated Columbus, Geo [Georgia],
June 23d. [23rd] 1836, on the subject of various expenses for subsistence, transportation, &c. & c. [et cetera et cetera], for a small batallion [battalion] of about 200 mounted men under the command of Major Jno [John] Coward, which was placed on the frontier to guard it against the Creeks, & which claims, it appears from the Governor's letter, none of the officers feel authorized to settle. It is necessary that they be settled as early as practicable, and you will therefore lose no time in paying them or causing them to be paid, so far as the United States are bound to pay, taking care that the vouchers be such, that no difficulty will arise in their admission at the Treaty -- it matters not whether the claims be for subsistence, camp equipage, ordnance stores, or objects [illegible text] such as belong to the Q.Masters [Quartermaster's] Department. I presume there can be no doubt, that the UStates are bound to make the payments -- the men could not have received their pay if not.

I am Sir &c. [et cetera]
by order of the Secr'y [Secretary] of War
sd. [signed]
[Signed] Tho. [Thomas] F. Hunt
&c. &c. [et cetera et cetera]
To Lt. Colo. [Colonel] H. Stanton, Qr.Mr. [Quarter Master] U.S. Army, or the Senior officer of the Qr.Mrs. Dept [Quarter Master's Department] Columbus, Geo. [Georgia]
