- This letter dated February 2, 1836 from Thomas J. Burney, in Madison, Georgia, to Governor William Schley (Governor of Georgia, 1835-1837) concerns a request from the Brigadier General of the Georgia Militia for 44 additional men from Regiments 29 and 41 of Morgan County. Burney tells the governor that the 44 men should all come from the 41st Regiment, as a company of men from the 29th Regiment was recently sent into duty. Burney asks the governor to relay this message to Colonel Charles R. Floyd and to ask if any men from the 29th Regiment will indeed be necessary. He also assures Governor Schley that the people of Madison are in support of his actions regarding "Indian difficulties," probably in reference to the Second Seminole War (1835-1842).

Sir,
The Brigadier Genl. [General] has ordered a draft from the two Regiments of this County, of seventy five men each; and from information that may be relied on, there is but little doubt that the whole number will be made up, from the upper or 41st. Regt. [Regiment] by volunteers -- This will be done because the Company that recently went from Morgan belonged almost exclusively to the 29th. or lower Regt. [Regiment] -- It is desirable under existing Circumstances, that without a great necessity, that no more men should be required from the 29th. Regt [Regiment] -- Your excellency is therefore respectfully requested to inform Col. [Colonel] Floyd, if possible by Saturday morning, whether the draft of 22 men will be required from the 29th. provided the 41st. Regt. [Regiment] furnishes the whole number of 44 men -- or in the event that the 41st. does not supply the whole No. [Number] whether it will be sufficient that the 29th. Supply enough to make up that number --
There exists a fine feeling amongst our Citizens generally, on the subject of our Indian difficulties, and so far as I know, a general approval of the Course your Excellency has pursued -- Excuse the liberty I have taken in writing this letter;
