It is with great regret that I am constrained to inform Your Excellency of a most daring. & Violent Murder Committed by the Indians of the Salacoe Town On a Mr. Bowman & Family. The entire Family was inhumanely butchered and the Dwelling consumed by Fire. From the report enclosed addressed to your Excellency. But directed to Genl. [General] Coffee or myself the horrid deed was committed on the night of the 15th. Inst. [Instant] But from the circumstance of that part of the country being very thinly settled it was [added text: not ] discovered until Monday last past. I have as yet received no information on this subject other than that contained in the enclosed report. Immediately on my receiving the information which rd [reached] us early this morning. On my way from Head Quarters to this Station I detached a command & sent them with dispatch to the neighborhood where the unfortunate occurrence took place [deleted text: & ] An express from the command will meet [added text: me ] On tomorrow evening Twenty five miles distant from this place, at which time all the information that can be obtained relative to this unhappy transaction I [deleted text: may ] am in hopes I shall receive. If it should be necessary in my opinion for the security of that part of the country I shall proceed forthwith. With the entire Guard & remain until further orders. I cannot think that there is any settled or determined Hostility existing with the Indians against the Whites Generally in this County. There must of been some personal difficulty between this unfortunate Family & the Indians The whole neighborhood were in the same situation unsuspecting & unprotected. Your Excellency

may rest perfectly satisfyed [satisfied] that all that can be done with the limited means that I have, shall be done, Your Excellency will be constantly advised of everything appertaining to this command as soon as time & circumstances will possible admit
