Senate Chamber Washington
March 27th. 1840
Governor McDonald
Dear Sir
I have this morning received by mail a large packet of papers, post marked at Milledge [Milledgeville], & which from their character & contents, I presume are forwarded from the Executive office of Ga. but no notice to that effect accompanies the papers. These papers are upon the subject of the disbursments [disbursements] made by the state of Georgia, under authority of the Legislature, for the payment of the malitia [militia] called into service during the year
1838. to repel the invasion of the Indians from Florida &c. [et cetera] until the receipt of this package, I had supposed, that the necessary appropriation to reimburse the Treasury of Georgia, for this expenditure, had been made at the last session of Congress. When I was called home before the close of the last session of Congress by domestic afflictions --

I know the subject was before the House of Rep [Representatives] . and apprehended no difficulty in procuring the necessary appropriation. But I now suppose it failed, and will without loss of time investigate the subject, and as far as may be in my power, endeavor to procure the necessary Legislation. In the mean time, will you have the goodness, to inform me, whether the records of the Executive office, afford any additional information, which may be necessary for me to have, in connection with my duty on this subject.

Very Respectfully Yr. Obt. Servt. [Your Obedient Servant]
[Signed] Wilson Lumpkin
