Dear Sir
Our friend Col. John P. Lucas of Walton County has communicated to me by letter, that he is very desirous to take an active part in the services of his Country in its present difficulties & dangers from Indian hostility, or in any subsequent War that may occur with France, Indians, or any other power. Should there be any station within your gift, connected with active military opperations [operations], & which might be desirable to Col. Lucas -- I have no hesitancy in recommending [deleted text: Col. Lucas ] [added text: him ] to your favorab [edge of document: le ] consideration -- First as a gentleman of honor & integrity, & possessing the confidence of those who know him best in a very high degree -- He is a man of firmness, & has the advantage of considerable experience in active service during the last war.

Col. Lucas has served his country in various offices for many years past, & has always acquited [acquitted] himself in a manner highly creditable to him [deleted text: self ], both as regards his capacity & correctness -- Therefore I have no hesitation in repeating my entire confidence, in his capacity & integrity of character for usefulness in the active service of his county, in any station to which (with his modesty of character) he may aspire.
I am sir with very great respect yr. Obt. Srvt. [your Obedient Servant]
