Sir, + Richard Barfield of
Jones County.
I am sorry to inform you that a man, supposed to be a Mr. Lewis (a Citizen of Georgia) was found dead on the 17th Inst. [Instant] about 14 Miles above ft [fort] Gaines, & from the best information Capt. McIntosh (who commands at that post) could obtain on the subject, it appears that he was killed by an Indian of the Mickisukey Tribe, who reside below the National boundary line . -- I have demanded the Indian that commited [committed] the murder, of the Prince Speaker to the lower Creeks, & of the princ [added text: i ] ple chiefs that reside on the Chattahouchy, & have stated to them, that as long as they suffer such bad men to remain among them, I will hold them

responcible [responsible] for their conduct. --
From the friendly disposition of the Prince, & most of the chiefs, on the Chattahouchy, I am induced to believe that they will use every exertion in their power, to have the murderer taken or put to death . --
I have given you the particulars of this unfortunate affair, as far as they have come to my knowledge; with the view that the public sentiment may not be unnecessarily excited by enormous reports getting a float; as I conceive the wanton act of a worthless & vagrant Indian, who has nothing at stake, should [added text: not ] induce us to form opinions unfavourable [unfavorable] to the friendly disposition of a large portion of the Nation.
Respectfully I have the honor to be Sir, Yr. Mo. [Your Most]
