Athens
15th July 1806
That I might have it in my power to give your Excellency the earliest information concerning the prospect of having the boundary line run, pursuant to the convention between the United States and the Creeks, I wrote Genl [General] Meriwether on Friday; by a special messenger, to enquire whether Colo. [Colonel] Hawkins had arrived or any information had been received from him; and received for answer a letter, of which the enclosed is a copy. Since the receipt of this letter I have waited on the Genl. [General] who is of opinion that Colo. [Colonel] Hawkins is stil [still] indisposed. Presuming that it is not likely my services will be required on the Boundary Line until you receive an answer to the letter you wrote the Secy. [Secretary] of War from Athens, I have deemed it not incompatible with the engagement which I hold myself to be under to execute with promptness your excellencies commands in regard to that [document damaged: line ], to conform to Genl. [General] Meriwethers wishes by running the traverse line mentioned in his letter. I am to commence the line at the Burn'd [Burned] Village on Chattahooche as soon as I can get out with my party to that place. It will terminate at Athens, where, on my return, I hope to have the pleasure to meet your further commands

With gratitude and respect I am your Excellencies most Obt. [Obedient] Humble Servt. [Servant]
[Signed] Levin Wailes
