Washington
April 14th 1788
Sir
I am just returned from the big Shoals on the Oconee, where I left Col Clark with about one hundred & thirty men; their provisions almost exhausted; having had nothing but some Indian meal and a few fish they catch. -- on friday Some of our Spies were fired upon by about thirty Indians at the Cowford. I am told one of the Spies was wounded.
I will be much obliged to you if you will inform me of any news you may receive lately from the nation

I have the honor to be Sir Yr. [Your] very obdt. [obedient] & hl. servt. [humble servant]
[Signed] Elijah Clark
