Extract of a Letter from Colo [Colonel] Maxwell dated
29th Marc [March] 1788

"On last evening a party of Indians attacked Capt [Captain] Lewis at Mr Shepherds plantation [edge of page] upper settlement of Midway. He had been out on a Scout to Beards Creek and across that to Canoochie and had returned about the middle of the afternoon turned out his Horses and several of his Men had left Camp to procure forage. A little before Sunset the Indians were discovered coming up behind some outhouses. The Men had just time to fly to their arms and conceal themselves when the enemy marched up within forty Yards discovered the White party and fired. The fire was instantly returned which killed one Indian on the spot and wounded two more The Savages immediately run and Capt [Captain] Lewis ordered his Horses to be caught and pursued them about a Mile to where they had left their bundles and where thy dispersed. One of the wounded bled very freely for some distance the other not so much. Captain Lewis says his Men behaved with the greatest bravery and that it was with difficulty

he could restrain them from charging the enemy previous to a knowledge of their numbers. The exact number could not be asscertained [ascertained] .
I am afraid Glynn is entirely evacuated and the Southern parts of this County are much alarmed but I hope matters not so bad as they are represented"

I am &
