Fair Hope McIntosh County
27th Augt. [August] 1821.
Dear Sir
Your esteemed favor of the 15th inst. [instant] haz [has] only been received today. I am much surprised and astonished that the artful sophistry of a few ambitious and designing characters should so far mislead the people of Georgia, as to stagger their better reason. On a moments reflection, [added text: what ] [deleted text: That ] object, [added text: could ] the commissioners [deleted text: [illegible text] ] have in view but to promote the best interests of the States, which they pursued with unwearried [unwearied] diligence and solicitude; no other motive could have possibly existed, no benefit resulted to them as individuals, but very great benefit to the State and the citizens whose claims were recognized . Abuse for patriotick [patriotic] services is a poor reward, my conduct or motives as a public servant has never before been scrutinized or suspected, and I thank God I feel [added text: a ] conscious rectitude of principle, and that I have essentially served Georgia and its citizens in my last public act. -- My whole life has been devoted to my country's service; when she prospered I rejoiced, when adverse fortune assailed her I mourned, my warmest services were not wanting in the hour that tryed [tried] mens souls, and I am comforted when I reflect that my feeble tho [though] willing services were exerted

with my countrymen for that Independence and happy government we now enjoy; and now in the evening of my life when I am waiting with resignation to the will of God, when I shall depart hence for a better and more durable state of things, what inducement at this stage of my existance [existence] to do an unrightious [unrighteous] act, but I am willing to rest the purity of my intentions to a higher tribunal than man .
I am Dear Sir respectfully Your friend (signed)
[Signed] J. [John] McIntosh
Major Genl. [General] Daniel Newnan Milledgeville
