Dear Sir,
I am happy to acknowledge the receipt of your favor, bearing date the 6th Instant, in which you authorised [authorized] me to use such precautionary measures, as I should deem sufficient to guard against any meditated incursion that might be attempted by a party of the hostile Indians; agreeably to which instructions, I have kept out regular scouts and spies consisting of such a Number of mounted men, as [deleted text: may ] seemed sufficient to answer the desired effect, and I think whenever the scouts and spies are discontinued, [unclear text: though ] it might be proper to keep them out from the mouth of the Alcovahatch to the Morgan line, as that part of the frontier will be out of the protection of the encampment, and there has already been depredations in that quarter, which consisted of a [unclear text: Mill's ] being robed [robbed], and several horses stole last Thursday night. I have, in conformity to your request, been above the seven Islands, and made choice of a suitable place for an encampment on the [unclear text: land of a ] Mr. [unclear text: Chapman ] ,

from whence there is a direct road to Monticello. You may inform the Contractor that he can get one hundred and forty or fifty barrels of corn at my plantation, from the young man that lives with me.
