St. Augustine. Fla. [Florida]
Feby [February] 5th. 1836.
My dear Sir.
I have no time to write, and if I had, there is but little news to communicate. It is difficult to resist the desire I have to assure you that your politeness towards me is held in constant remembrance. On the way here we touched at Darien and St. Mary's and at Fernandina all of which places present a fine idea wretchedness and decay: (do not repeat this) I do not know what could induce me to reside at Either one of those places. Speaking of decay, I never saw a [unclear text: ruin ] in our country that was interesting -- . St. Augustine is unquestionably a dull place for a person who has seen any thing better -- . All our recollections center at Savannah -- We wish nothing (except the Seminole Campaign) to interrupt the agreeable train of thought which one treatment at Savannah has made us [deleted text: Experience ] indulge in -- . I cannot as yet give you any military news of importance -- Gen Eustis has not yet arrived : but is Expected daily with the So : Ca : [South Carolina] militia and several more companies of Regulars. We have just secd. [secured] orders ( [unclear text: Merchant's & Forters' ] Company) to proceed to Bulow's: forty miles below this, and [unclear text: we ]

find that [unclear text: post ] to the last: a service probably attended with some danger: but we have no apprehensions. We shall march tomorrow or next day. In a few days from this our army will be able to take the field and commence offensive operations -- . If the Enemy can only be found : we shall soon give an account of him : nothing is so much to be dreaded as searching for him in the Everglades -- . If summer overtakes us in in [in] the interim, it will be more destructive to all concerned than Indian bullets.
The weather here has been Excessively cold: all is dull and clueless. I have been at Mr Ashley's quarters but have not yet seen him --

Please present my best respects to your family and believe me with great respect,
Yr. Obt [Your Obedient] Servant

P. S. You will of course perceive that nothing in the above is intended for the Gazettes --
[Signed] JSL
