- This document is a letter from William Gibbons, Jr. to a Mr. (Nathanael ?) Greene dated at Sharon (Taliaferro County), Georgia, March 10, 1783. Gibbons refers to the hiring of slaves belonging to William Maxwell. He also remarks on an upcoming Indian treaty negotiation to be held near Augusta in early May (probably the Treaty of Augusta, with the Creek Indians, signed May 31, 1783). Gibbons has hopes of seeing Greene at the treaty.

Sir,
Immediately on the Receipt of your letter the
28th Feby. [February] I applied to Mr. Wm [William] Maxwell & Capt. McKay respecting the Negroes of Mr Maxwell. was informed by them they were not to be hired -- I have made enquiry since I find none to be hired upon any terms -- I am informed the Indian treaty will take place the
first day of May next within a few miles of Augusta, I hope to have the pleasure of seeing you there --
I hope Mrs. Greene has recovd. [recovered] her health --
My Mother & family Join me in Compts [Compliments] to You & Mrs. Greene --
