Department of War,

19: March, 1822.
Sir,
I have received your letter of the
25th January last, and have allowed the account which accompanied it for articles delivered to the Cussetau Chiefs, preparatory to the late treaty concluded with the Creek nation.
Your explanation respecting the $5000- paid to McIntosh and the deputation from the Creek nation, early in
1820, while in Washington, is satisfactory as relates to yourself, and I have directed that sum to be remitted to your credit. But as it was never intended by the Department that the expenses of that Deputation should be paid by the Government, the amount will be charged to the Creek annuity for this year.

I have the honor to be, Your obedt. Servt. [obedient Servant]
[Signed] J. [John] C. Calhoun Genl. [General] D. [David] B. Mitchell, Mount Nebo near Milledgeville, Ga.
