Fair Hope McIntosh County
15th. Octr. [October] 1821.
My dear Sir
your esteemed favour [favor] of the
4th Inst. [Instant] I have just received, and avail myself of the earliest opportunity of replying to your remarks on my "address to the impartial & unprejudiced citizens of Georgia"
but before I speak on that subject, permit me to assure you unequivocaly [unequivocally] of the pleasure and satisfaction your Letter afforded me on many Accounts, particularly the assurance you have given me, that you are not the author [deleted text: of any ] of any of the recent anonymous writings, that are dayly [daily] appearing in our [unclear text: Gazettes ], -- as I was lead to belive [believe] those over the signature of Socrates was written by you -- I am sorry I was staggered for a moment by the rumour [rumor] and particularly, when I reflected on the habits of intimacy & friendship that had always subsisted between us; and when I recollected that my whole conduct and views as regarded the Treaty was freely and unreservedly communicated to you
And I am persuaded you could never have doubted for a moment my friendly disposition towards you, and as a proof of my desire to [unclear text: wipe of ] unmerrited [unmerited] censures, -- my Letter to a friend in Milledgeville the retract of which was published (that was only intended for his Eye,) ought to convince you fully of my feelings and disposition, as regarded yourself. -- being hurried the want of time will only punish me to [added text (appears to be different ink and hand): 58 ]

remark on those parts of my address which you speak of
"the Agent himself -- is too well acquainted with the fallacy of this charge, not to repel it if he chuses [chooses] " -- by this paragraph it was not intended to be understood, that you were actually apprised of the employment of Donaldson by the [unclear text: Comms [Commission] ] -- to aid by any means, or in any manner in promoting their views, but that you were as well informed on this point as I was myself
the intercourse and candour [candor] on my part I considered a sufficient assurance & pledge that I was utterly ignorant of Donaldsons Agency as spoken of in the matter, and therefore justifyd [justified] the sentence, as I explain it
I have already declared that I never heard of his employment in any manner whatever by the Comms. [Commissioners] or that he was entitled to any Compensation in relation to the Treaty, untill [until] after it had been effected, the Commission closed, and the members of it about to depart, on the morning which you mention, it must be therefore obvious, that I was as ignorant of the promisses [promises] said to be made to Donaldson or the object of them as yourself -- in relation to the next quotation in your Letter, I cannot but in justice state, that it was my belief that you used exertion to have the Treaty Effected, & whether successful or not, yr [your] claim to the fulfilment [fulfillment] of my promise in doing you

justice in a communication to the President, would have been equally just, and in the event of failure would have felt myself bound to have performed it, having witness'd [witnessed] your Efforts.

I remain My dear Sir with [unclear text: Same ] Sentiments of regard & Esteem I have always professd [professed] yr. [your] very obt. huml Sert [obedient humble Servant]
[Signed] [unclear text: J [John] ] McIntosh
