My dear Sir
It is important that you should let our friends in the West know that an effort is made to prevent a division of their land upon the promise that all is now peace & quiet!!!
You should tell them that I told the President that quiet was the result of their confidence in his promises that he would send out some proper person to examine & report on the condition of the tribe & they should be careful to impress on the mind of the government agents that they are submitg [submitting] patiently now waitg [waiting] to see what the President will do. That they should explain to their people that Ross endeavors to persuade [unclear text: the govt. ] that all is or soon will be quiet.
You know my views and you must do the best you can for us. in all matters.

Yours truly
[Signed] Duff Green Mr Wm H [William Holland] Thomas
