Treasury Department
Janry [January] 9th 1855
Sir
I herewith enclose a statement showing the sums due the Cherokee Indians of North Carolina to the
29th July last (provided they were then surviving) prepared by the Second auditor.
The blanks in the receipt column of the statement returned with your letter of the
28th inst [instant] indicate from a cursory glance that upwards of $1500 of the sum advanced in
Janry [January] last for the payments on that statement remain in your hands [illegible text] . This statement has now been referred to the First auditor for adjustment which will show the precise balance. I have directed a further advance to you from the Treasury of $2500 which with the above balance will probably suffiece [suffice] for the payments required upon the present statement
In making these payments you will follow the instructions of my letter of the
18 Janry [January] 1854, a copy of which was transmitted you on the
29th april last -- and the suggestion contained in my letter of the
11 Sept last

Very respectfully your obed Serv [obedient Servant]
[Signed] James Guthrie secretary of the Treasury

James W. Terrell Agent &c [et cetera] Qualla Town NoCa [North Carolina]
