Treasury Department
Janry [January] 8th 1855
Sir
I have the honor to state in reply to your letter of the
7th inst [instant] that I have received to day [today] from the 2d auditor the roll of the Cherokee Indians of North Carolina which show the sum of 4,409.13 to have been due the persons stated thereon on the
29 July last.
According to the receipts upon the roll returned by Mr Terrell, which is this day referred to the 1st auditor for settlement, it seems from a cursory glance that $1500 to $2000 of the former advanc [advance] remains in his hands unaccounted for. I have therefore in transmitting the new Roll to Mr Terrill directed a further advanc [advance] of $2500 to be made him to effect the payments due in
July as above.

Very respectfully Your obed Ser [obedient Servant]
[Signed] James Guthrie Secretary of the Treasy [Treasury]

Hon T. [Honorable Thomas] L. Clingman House of Representatives
