Qualla Town N.C. [North Carolina]
July 22d 1856
Sir
I herewith transmit to you the payroll of the Cherokee Indiansresiding in North Carolina according to instructions received from the Secretary of the Treasury. I have attended at Murphey and at this place and have paid all who have come to me. I have concluded not to visit Duck Town Cheoih Cah too ga-jah and other places untill [until] I shall have received the next remittence at which time I expect to see every claimant and clear the roll, if possible. The compensation allowed me will not justify me in going all round every time.
In regard to the suspended payments I have not yet got the business all arranged but it is on the way and will all be adjusted in my next return. Let it all stand as it is for the present
I received in
May last from the Treasurer of the United States six Treasury drafts for $500.00 each [deleted text: amo ]

amounting in all to $3000.00 I have paid out on the roll $1479.21 My commission of 5 percent on payments 73.96 1553.17 1553.17 leaving unexpended $1446.83 one thousand four hundred and forty six dollars and eighty three cents [deleted text: unexpended ] in my hands besides what remained over last year.
I hope the department will make the next remittence as soon as practicable as I am verry [very] anxious to complete the payments [deleted text: and wind up the business ] and for reasons above stated do not feel justified in going over all the Indian settlements till it comes.

I am Verry [Very] Respectfully
Your Obdt. Servt. [Obedient Servant]
[Signed] J. [James] W. Terrell
1st Auditor of the Treasury Washington D.C.
