FOREWORD
The object of this booklet is not to criticize, or condemn, but it is for the vindication of truth, and for the purpose of bringing together dear saints of God, who are separated, and deprived of sacred associations, and privileges, which they hold dearer than every other privilege on earth.
I kindly ask the reader to study the contents prayerfully, before passing upon it. There has never been a time when God's children should be more devoted than now; sweet fel lowship should abound, and everything that has a tendency to separate them should be blotted out. Our lives and medi tations should be above confusion, because confusion is not of the Lord. Love should abound. Love is of God.
Separations among Primitive Baptists in many places has been so hurtful, that the visible church of God has be come almost extinct. Many of God's children are cut off from the sweet fellowship of the saints, and are deprived of many comforts, and swteet privileges, on account of brethren "Striving over words of no profit". The Lord plainly teach es us not to do this.
If you are a Primitive Baptist, or a friend of the Primi tive Baptists, I feel sure you will be interested. After you have read the contents, do your part. Don't put it off. You are needed. You can be of great service. Don't be afraid to act. You will be blessed in doing.

The Following is a Copy of a Letter Written to Eld. S. N. Bedford, of Texas, by Eld. Wm. McCain, of Bellville, Arkansas.
August 10th, 1911. Dear Brother:
Yours to hand. I feel complimented by your claim that I wrote in a gentle spirit. I endeavored to be governed by the Text Gal. 6:1.
Please in your next letter, tell me who is to be restored to spiritual? You began your letter by quoting 1st John 5-12: "He that hath the son, hath life." Please notice the 10th verse: "He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself." Notice the llth verse: "That God hath given US eternal life; He that hath the Son, hath life." 13th verse: "These things have I written unto YOU that believe on the name of the Son of God; That YE may know that YE have eternal life, and that YE may believe on the name of the Son of God." Now see 1st verse: "WHOSOEVER be lieveth" is a proper subject for baptism. Question: Do you baptize the spirit or the intirety? Or is the pronouns US, YOU, YE, HIMSELF, WHOSOEVER written to spirits? "I have written unto YOU." Please turn to Gal. 2:20: "I am crucified with Christ; and the life (the given life) which I now live in the flesh, I live by the faith of the Son." Paul received this life by hearing the voice of the Son of God, and lived it in the flesh. He says there was a wonderful change in him. Notice what he was doing before the change and after. See if there was a similar change in YOU, in YOUR past life. See if YOU are zealous of good works. Titus 2-14. Now, or was you always zealous of good works? If so, would a change make you worse?
Yes, I believe in a future change, as Christ was raised up from the dead, also our mortal bodies "shall be quickened by His spirit that dwelleth in YOU." Rom. 8-11.
Dear Brother I hope you will write me one more letter and in it cite to places where dead spirits are found in the Bible either quickened or not quickened. "And YOU hath he quickened WHO were dead." Eph. 2-1. Paul failed to say "and your dead spirits hath he quickened," after tell ing them, in times past how THEY walked. He tells them: "Even when WE were dead in sins, hath he quickened US." Read on and notice the pronouns US, WE, YE, YE. On
last Sunday I commented on Eph. 2-8, in an experimental way. I showed the condition WE were in nature dead by Adam's transgressions, how we used to walk, spoke of the only remedy for fallen men, the results of grace, and finally the two natures, the warfare, the obedience of the children of God, and their chastisements. I felt the effects of my ef forts, and God's goodness to fallen MAN, but I did not use to see, and understand and feel this way, and I cite to Eph. 1-8. See chapter 4-18-19: "There is a change in these Gen tiles now, but there was a time when there was no differ ence hence a change."
Yes, I believe flesh and spirit produces each after its kind: "That which is born of the flesh, is flesh; (its kind is flesh) and that which is born of the spirit is spirit" (its kind is spirit). Man is called flesh. See Gen. 2-24: "And they shall be one flesh"; "As thou hast given him power over all flesh," St. John 17-2. Get your concordance "Spirit produces after its kind" The word "WHATSO EVER" does not relate to persons, is not a pronoun, "what soever is born of God." Even our faith is a fruit of the spirit, produced by the spirit. See gentleness of the spirit Gal. 6-1. See the difference in what the flesh and the spirit produces Gal. 5. Spirit of faith, 1st Cor. 4-13. You seem to think if the man in his intirety was born of the spirit, the body would not die. The body lives while in a dead state dead in sin. It lives also in a quickened state. The Ephesians were in a quickened state when Paul wrote to them, not literally dead, "And you hath he quickened" as he wrote to them. This eternal life that Christ gives to His sheep will net hinder literal death, but it will be made mani fest "In our mortal flesh." See 2 Cor. 4-10-11.
Brother, I have taken some tune to try to keep you from saying, or writing "Heresy" to your brethren. I sure be lieve, to leave our bodies out of regeneration that they will be left out of the resurrection, or there will be no resurrec tion. I am not a TWO SEEDER.
Yours in hope, W. M. McCAIN.
P. S.: As you referred to the inner man I will just say
"As long as you understand our spirits to be the inner man,
the tangle will remain."
Study well the text Eph. 4-22-24. None but the children
of God have the inner man it is created in righteousness,
and true holiness, to be put on by YE brethren, and they are
the ones to put off the old man. I believe I have referred to
all you wrote about.
W. M. M.
THE FOREGOING LETTER WAS SENT, OR BROUGHT OVER TO ARKANSAS BY ELD BEDFORD OF TEXAS. IT WAS PRESENTED TO SALEM ASSO CIATION BY ELD MOSES BARTON OF ABBOTT, AR KANSAS. THE ASSOCIATION ACTED ON THE LET TER IN SEPTEMBER, 1911.
I WILL NOW REPRODUCE A PORTION OF THE CORRESPONDING LETTER FROM SALEM TO NEW HOPE ASSOCIATION IN 1911:
TO NEW HOPE ASSOCIATION: We advise you that Eld Win. McCain, a member of Chickalah Church of our Association, is advocating and published (by let ter )that in regeneration the whole man is born of God, and that he also states that you are in harmony with him in this point.
(Signed) SALEM ASSOCIATION.
READ THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT WRITTEN BY ELD McCAIN SOME TIME AGO:
STATEMENT FROM ELD. W. M. McCAIN
I believe strictly the text: "Yerily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born again he cannot see the kingdom of God," John 3-3. The word AGAIN in the text means, second or more than one, leaving off the prefix whole or part. I do not want to add anything to the words of in spiration. I consider the text a truth as stated, "He (the man) cannot see the kingdom of God except he is born again" (second time).
I recently met an Elder of the opposing party, it was my proposition that we have a friendly talk, and we did. He expressed some views on the new birth question. He said the spirit was the inner man, and that the spirit was born of God, and that it was made perfect, and nothing was done for the body in the new birth, only it was kept under subjection by the spirit.
I quoted Acts 7-50: "And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying Lord Jesus receive my spirit." I said that I believed his spirit went to God in heaven where per fection is found, and that his spirit was more perfect than before (I do not see how perfection can be improved upon). I quoted to him 2 Cor. 7-1: "Let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit." The poet says "In heaven above no sin is found." I believe all spirits that go to God in heaven are free from all filthiness there.
I quoted other texts, "Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry, for anger resteth in the bosom of fools", Eel. 7-9. It is said there is nothing done for the body in the new birth. Romans 1-17 says, "The just shall live by faith". Paul be lieved in the resurrection both of the just and unjust. See Acts 24-15. . If there is nothing done for the body, it is not justified. All go to the grave alike, all would be raised alike, and all go to eternal banishment alike. I do not believe the doctrine the above mentioned brother advocated, but I did not tell him so. He said "The body of a child of God was yet dead in sin" and quoted Rom. 8-10: "Only kept under subjection by the spirit." The text Acts 24-15 teaches me that there will be a resurrection of two kinds of bodies: "just and unjust'. It is "God that justifieth", Rom. 8-30-33. (The just ones) Nothing done for the unjust.
After the above conversation, Eld C. H. Cayce republished an article written by his father, and published in The Primitive Baptist in 1894. Eld S. F. Cayce referred to Eld
John Gill's comment on John 3-6 over 150 years ago. I endorse both Cayce's and Gill's views. I refer to this to show what was advocated 150 years ago:
"And it shall come to pass afterwards, I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. And also upon the servants and the handmaidens in those days will I pour out my spirit," Joel 2-28-29.
I now refer to the New Testament to see a fulfillment of the above prophecy. Peter refers to this prophecy "And it shall come to pass in those days sayeth God "I will pour out of my spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daugh ters shall prophecy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams and on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my spirit end they shall prophesy." Acts 2-17-18. The six teenth says, "But this is that which was spoken of by Joel". So Peter gives a fulfillment of the prophecy. Again Paul says, "But after that, the kindness and love of God, our Saviour, towards men appeared, not by words of righteous ness which we have done, but according to His mercy He hath saved us (Paul and Titus) by the washing of regenera tion, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; which he shed (pour ed) on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour." Titus 3-3-4-5-6. Notice the words: "On US." Hear sixth verse, again Paul says, "And such were some of you: But YE are washed, But YE are sanctified, But YE are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the spirit of our God." 1st Cor. 6-11. Again Peter says "And as I began to speak the Holy Ghost fell ON them (Gentiles) as on us at the be ginning." See Acts 11-15-19. Paul says, "Having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure (or clean) water", Heb. 11-22. I quote the above texts to show the fulfillment of the prophesy of Joel. The words UPON and (5N and US, FLESH and OUR BODIES, in the texts, contradicts the idea "Nothing done for the body". If our spirits are perfect in the present state, they cannot be more perfect in the future state. There is no degrees in perfection.
"And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it set UPON each of THEM (not spirits) at that same time. And they (people) were all FILLED with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues as the spirit gave them utterance". Acts 2-3-4. Chapter 7-55 says, "But he (Stephen) being full of the Holy Ghost" the two texts gives the idea "FILLED FULL of the Holy Ghost."
8
"And when Paul had laid his hands UPON them, the Holy Ghost came on them, and they spake with tongues and pro phesied," as Joel foretold they would.
The above is very plain and should be understood by everyone.
After Salem Association published me an Elder in our church accused me of departing from the faith publicly. I made complaint to the church. There was a visiting Elder present. He says, "Brother McCain you did wrong in using the words 'Whole Man' in that letter (the letter I wrote Eld Bedford)". I denied the charge, and demanded the proof, proposing to acknowledge the wrong, and ask forgiveness if they proved it. They produced a letter, saying "It was a true copy". The proof was not there, and no proof was es tablished that I had used the expressions. My proposition as above stated was disregarded. There was confusion for quite a while. The Elder who accused me of departing from the faith was sustained by the majority, without any proof that I had departed from the faith as charged. It was announced by some that they withdrawed from the majority party, and the Association. Question: Did the minority have a right to act in this manner? Scriptural proof: 2 John 10-11: "If there come any among you and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed; for he that biddeth him God speed, is a partaker of his evil deeds." Again, Rom. 16-1: "Mark them that cause divisions contrary to the doctrine we have learned, and avoid them." Again, 2 Thes. 3-6: "Now we commend you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw yourself from every brother that walketh disorderly."
We will surely be thankful when the shadow and gloom passes away, for we have had no showing for our lives. Being excluded, virtually, by the association.
I have time after time agreed to make satisfaction for all just claims against me, when they are made known to me. I could not find out what acknowledgements were re quired; finally I was advised that Eld Barton required me to make acknowledgement. I made this acknowledgement in October, 1914, at Chickalah Church. Only three said they would forgive me. Eld Kerkwood was not one of the three.
We feel like we are the identity of Chickalah Church. (See statement signed by members in another part of the booklet). The Baptists abroad do not know the facts, that is why we are circulating the facts in the case. We are cut off by association ruling.
The trouble is strictly doctrine. They make no com-
plaint for any other cause that I know of. It is the privilege of Point Remove and New Hope Association to stand by the Salem Association, but I don't believe they are agreed as a whole. I know there are members of the Salem Associa tion that do not feel satisfied in the matter. I know that many in the New Hope Association, also Point Remove As sociation that have nothing against me. I have lived among them for years, and spent many sweet seasons with them. Oh, what an injustice it is to us to have to suffer to gratify prejudice. That is against me in particular. I am the target.
I now refer to Thes. 3-6: "That ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that WALKETH disorderly"; walketh (present time), not did walk, nor will walk. I understand while this WALKETH disorderly is being done, is the time to obey the command in the text.
The question is, should the minority party offer them selves to the majority party, make acknowledgments for withdrawing from them and labor with them for peace? The things that caused the minority to withdraw is not the question. They are not detailed here to ask this on a point of order. We desire to be honorably restored to the fellow ship of orderly Baptists.
I wish to state that I had a case before the church in 1911, in order, according to Matthew 18-15-16-17. I will ad mit that if it had not been in order, I should go back and acknowledge my wrong, but when the church acted in the case and sustained Eld Kirkwood without any testimony against me, and failed to give me a hearing, or any showing whatever, I could not deal with the church as in the first case according to Matthew. What was said and done in open conference could not be under the same head as the first circumstance. I could not go to the church alone-;-! could not have been one or two of them and used as witnesses, nor told it to the church. It was an open conference.
Now I do not wish to take up space in continuing this appeal from a personal standpoint. I wish to state that I have letters from members of the Point Remove Associa tion, endorsing my stand on doctrine, also stating that they hold me in full fellowship. There are Elders and Brethren in the Salem Association that have asserted that they in dorsed me. There is good brethren in the New Hope Asso ciation that I have associated with for years, that believe the same doctrine I do. If I have changed, Brethren, point it out to me and I will make every amend asked for. What, more do you ask? What more can I do?

THE FOLLOWING IS A STATEMENT FROM THE MEMBERS OF THE CH1CRALAH CHURCH
Stafford, Ark., June, 1919. We, the undersigned, hereby assert that we are holding our regular meetings. We feel that we are the identity of Chickalah Church, inasmuch as we are standing on the same foundation, and principles we have ever been standing, but we are cut off from the Baptists abroad by Associational ruling. We desire to become affiliated with the Baptists generally. The Baptists know us. We 'have never been accused of being unsound, until a letter written to Eld S. R. Bedford of Texas by Eld Wm. McCain, was presented to the Salem Association in 1911. The letter was misquoted, and misconstrued. Through the minutes of Salem Association in 1911, Eld McCain was published as being unsound. He was accused of heresy. We believe the doctrine advocated by Eld McCain. He has not changed. He has ever advocated the same doctrine. The doctrine he preaches is believed by all orderly Bap tists, and We stand with him. If we are wrong we want to know it. Show us our error. We are ready to make amends. We love the truth, we love the cause, we love the breth ren. We do not want to be cut off from the Baptists in order. We do not believe the Salem Association as a whole is against us. We believe the Salem Association acted hastily on the letter written to Eld Bedford of Texas. It was at a time when there was a heated discussion going on in different sections of the country. We don't believe if it had been at any other tune it would have been noticed. We regret the division. We desire to live in peace, and order of the house of God. We have offered to do every thing in reason, but we cannot acknowledge to believing something we do not believe in order to satisfy a few who take a strong stand against us. We cannot forsake princi ples. Would it be right for us to do that? We have tried to be reconciled, but we cannot under the conditions. Right should prevail. We know the Bap tists abroad are not familiar with facts, that is why we are making this statement to the Baptists generally. Brethren will you hear us? If the statement from Eld McCain, to
ll
gether with this statement, is not satisfactory, what will you have us to do? We are ready to hear from you. .

EXTRACTS
Is the reenwed spirit of man, or the man whose spirit is renewed, the child of God?
Answer: The man whose spirit is renewed. S. HASSELL.
Who or what, was chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world? Ans.: It was MAN body, soul and spirit.
For whom did Christ atone on the cross? Ans.: For man in his entirety. Did the saviour love the entire man? Yes. Did he atone or make satisfaction for all of man's sins, or just a part? Ans.: He atoned, or made perfect satisfaction for all of man's sins.
LEE HANKS, In Primitive Baptist, May, 1913.
I think to say that the body forms no part of the child of God is misleading to say the least of it, as God's chosen and redeemed child, the entire being is included, and we have no authority to make a division, and say any part is not the child of God.
JOHN R. DAILY, ______ Signal, Dec. 1, 1914. Eld E. R. Robinson says, in Signal, 1913, while on a tour in Missis sippi: "All Baptists I have met on this trip believe, that regeneration makes men better morally all believe the man we see, if he is a believer, is a child of God all believe it is alien sinners that are quickened into life, made alive, and that God requires obedience of them. All believe that regenerated sinners worship God in spirit, and serve Him in body.
E. R. ROBINSON. Eld Lee Hanks in writing of his tour in Texas in 1913, says: "I did not see or hear of anyone in Texas who believes that man in his entirety is spiritual and immortally pure and holy now. There are
12
two natures in the child of God, but I/an't believe that some intangible
being in a man, is the child of God, ;ind the man a child of the devil.
I do not think we baptize a child of the devil, to get to baptize a
child of God.

LEE HANKS.
Is it wrong to say that regeneration makes immoral men better morally? What part of regeneratm men do you exhort to obey?
Ans.: To the first question w say NO it is not wrong to say that regeneration makes immoral wen better morally. If the grace of God in the heart will not make 01 e better morally, nothing wilL
When we exhort to obedience, v/3 try to follow the example of the apostle. One good example, we think, is Romans 12: "We be seech YOU therefore Brethren by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service". HE cannot render acceptable service unto God, unless HE presents his body.
Questions answered by Elder C. H. Cayce in Primitive Baptist in April, 1911.
From Eld P. D. Gold in ZIONS LAND MARE, July 15,1918:
The Fleeh
This word is often used in the scripture and with equal frequency,
perhaps, by mankind in general.
Does it mean literal flesh and blood only and merely, when it
ays "that which is born of the flesh is flesh"? It means something
besides that also. By the term flesh is meant the corrupt or carnal
nature of man which is deceitful, sinful, sensual, etc.
A Christian is a spiritual man not under condemnation, not in sin,
but under grace, and in grace.
To walk after the flesh, is to walk after the promptings of .the
corrupt, lustful nature of the Adamic man. We are to deny the flesh,
and mortify our members which are on earth.
There was Adam, before he sinned, a good man. After the fall
it was the same man, but corrupted and dead in law. In the new
birth, the same man that was dead is born again, or brought to life.
A new life, the life of Christ, the second Adam, the quickening spirit,
is given him.
Let us be careful to not walk after the flesh, for it is a poor ex
cuse to say the flesh did it. It is to confess our intimacy with a
willful enemy, and to confess that we are asleep, on our post and
unfaithful.
P. D. GOLD.
Eld W. C. Kicklighter in The Banner Herald, June 1, 1919: "I have heard of churches splitting on the question of what part of man is changed in the new birth. Now, I take the position that the whole man (and not a. part only) is changed. The same hands that once would place a deck of cards on the table, after the new birth will open the Bible. The same feet that once would walk about in the ball rooms now gladly walk about in the house of the Lord. The .same mouth that once was filled with oaths and profane language is now filled with songs of praise to the great Jehovah. The same eyes that once would look on the pages of trashy novels will now gladly look on the pages of the "Book of Books". All you who have received the new birth, know what I am trying to talk about. The
things yon once loved now you irte; mud things you once hated, now yon love. Your whole life (not part of it) has been changed, and you are living in a new sphere, so to speak.
W. C. KICKLIGHTER.
"I have never at any time mid, or believed that the man in his entirety was cleansed of all his sidrnl nature in regeneration, but have believed, said, and taught at aH ti*tes, that man in soul or spirit, was first prepared for heaven in regeneration, and would be prepared for heaven in body in the resurrectim.
"In the Gospel we address the quickened sinner in his entirety. He is able to do right and he is able to do wrong, but if the whole man was renovated and cleansed of his sinful nature he would not be a subject of gospel address. -
"Because I address the dear child of God, as a whole man or wo man, don't conclude that I mean that this man or woman is pure in body, or flesh, and have no sinful nature; there is a warfare going on in every saint, between the flesh and the spirit and will until these vile bodies are fashioned like the glorious body of our blessed Saviour; then let us confess our sins and not put them off on old Adam.
ELD W. J. HULL, Baptist Trumpet, January 26, 1911.
HUNDREDS OF ADDITIONAL EXTRACTS COULD BE QUOTED, BUT SPACE FORBIDS. THE EXTRACTS PROVES BEYOND ANY DOUBT AS TO HOW THE BAP TISTS STAND ON THE QUESTION OF REGENERA TION. THEIR EXPRESSIONS ARE IN PERFECT KEEPING WITH THE WORD OF TRUTH. CHRIST SAYS, "EXCEPT A MAN BE BORN AGAIN". THE PERSONAL PRONOUN IS USED BY BOTH CHRIST AND HIS APOSTLES, IN ADMONISHING THE BRETH REN. THEY WERE NOT ADDRESSING SPIRITS. THEY WERE ADDRESSING MAN AND WOMAN, WHO HAD BEEN QUICKENED INTO LIFE, AND WHO WERE CAPABLE OF OBEYING THE COMMANDS.

CONCLUSION
I was requested several months ago to compile the fore going facts. I feel a special interest in the brethren and sisters under consideration, and after prayerfully consider ing the matter I consented to give them any assistance I could.
Eld McCain is no stranger to you, neither are the other brethren, and I trust that you will give them a hearing.
Do you see anything in the letter written to Eld Bedford that is unsound? Do you see anything in his statement that is not in keeping with the Bible? Compare his statements with the extracts from ministers in different sections of the country, and judge for yourself whether or not they are in harmony. Of course we should take the Bible for our guide, but the extracts show that the doctrine advocated by Eld McCain is in accordance with sound Baptists in several states, and in perfect keeping with the word of God.
Those saints of God are making an appeal to you; will you hear them? Will you give them consideration? They cannot go to the opposing party. They will not hear them. Do you think the accusations against them are just? Do you believe it is right for them to be exiled from the communion of the saints? Is there any Bible authority for the actions against them? Do you believe in making a brother an of fender for a word? I am sure you do not.
My father, Eld W. J. Hull, formerly of Arkansas, and who spent several years in Texas, who now resides at Head land, Ala., was accused of the same thing Eld McCain is. He was accused of preaching the '^Whole Man Doctrine". One Eld Carter of North Texas inade these accusations against him. Carter was excluded for falsifying. Later he was restored by a counsel, and ordained to the work of the ministry. My father was finally exonerated by the church of his membership and all orderly Baptists. His preaching is received by all Baptists, except those who hold to the spirit idea the spirit child no change doctrine part dead and part alive a part born again and a part left where it was the part born again a child of God the other part a child of wrath nothing done for the body in regeneration body a separate person all bodies go to the graves alike spirit only justified (YOU DON'T BELIEVE THE ABOVE DOCTRINE? NEITHER DOES ELD McCAIN.) (SOMEBODY BELIEVES IT; WHO IS IT?)
The counsel published my father as being unsound, but
