- Description:
- Mountville, 1880s-1890s. Home of John Nelson Carleton with members of the family seen on the porch. Carleton was born in Vermont in 1829 and moved to Mountville in 1856. He married Angelet M. Evans the next year. He owned a business which manufactured buggies and carriages with coffins and furniture as sidelines. He had training as a teacher and was an expert telegrapher. During the Civil War he served in Company C, 2d Georgia State Troops. In 1888 he was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives. He died in 1898. His son, Olin, later owned this home. Note the unusual and secluded porch on the second floor. The home was located on Main Street.
