- Description:
- Glennville, 1908. Crowd gathered to hear Tom Watson speak at Hughes Hotel.
2003/07/17: Early in his career, Tom Watson made a small fortune as a lawyer and landowner. He was elected to the Georgia Legislature in 1882 and resigned before his term expired in 1884. Watson was elected to Congress as an Alliance Democrat in 1890, was nominated for Speaker of the House, and was instrumental in the founding of the Georgia Populist Party in 1892. In 1904 and 1908, Watson was the Populist candidate for President. While he once sought black political equality and racial unity, he later became a virulent racist and anti-Catholic crusader who rallied for the reorganization of the Ku Klux Klan. Tom Watson was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1920, and died from a cerebral hemorrhage in 1922. - External Identifiers:
