- "Andersonville, 1897. Providence Spring, Andersonville, Decoration Day 1897 (was official name of Memorial Day until mid 20's). Host of these men were Andersonville survivors (G[rand] A[rmy of the] R[epublic]) (had been prisoners) who returned to the site on Memorial Day. Man bending w/ cup has on GAR (Grand Army of [the] Rep[ublic]) uniform. Others' were local citizens."--from field notes
2003/07/17: According Civil War Album located on-line at http://www.civilwaralbum.com/index.html, "The Woman's Relief Corps, the national auxiliary of the Grand Army of the Republic, built the Providence Spring House in 1901 to mark the site where, on August 9, 1864, a spring burst forth during a heavy summer rainstorm--an occurrence many prisoners attributed to Divine Providence." - External Identifiers:
