- Gainesville, ca. 1880. Longstreet Heights, the home of Gen. James Longstreet. The home was destroyed by fire in July 1889. Longstreet was born in 1821; graduated from West Point in 1842; served in the Mexican War; resigned his commission and fought for the Confederacy; held several federal appointments after the Civil War. He died in Gainesville on Jan. 2, 1904 and is buried in Alta Vista Cemetery.
