- Hall County, 1935. Relatives of Gen. James Longstreet pose for a photograph at the dedication of the Longstreet Bridge. Longstreet was born Jan. 8, 1821 in South Carolina. He graduated from West Point 1842 and served in the Mexican War. In 1861 he resigned his commission to serve in the army of the Confederacy. After the Civil War he held a number of federal appointments. He died in Gainesville, Ga. on Jan. 2, 1904 and is buried in Alta Vista Cemetery. Back row, left to right: Josiah Crudup, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Ames Williams, Mrs. F. R. Longstreet, Jamie Longstreet. The two women in the front are Lula Longstreet Whelchel and Helen Dortch Longstreet. The latter was from Atlanta. She was Gen. Longstreet's second wife. They married Sept. 8, 1897.
