- Description:
- Gainesville, March 23, 1938. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt speaking at the dedication of the Civic Center. The city had been devastated by a tornado which struck it April 6, 1936. Several days later Roosevelt had made a train stop in the city to confer with city officials as to recovery progress and what further assistance was needed. After the city had completed its reconstruction, it invited him back. The courthouse square was named Roosevelt square and a monument was unveiled in his honor.
