- 2003/06/18: During the Civil War, James Longstreet was one of Robert E. Lee's most well-regarded lieutenant generals, leading Confederate troops in battles such as Chickamauga and Gettysburg. In 1875, Longstreet moved to Gainesville, and for a brief time served as the city's postmaster. He is buried in Alta Vista Cemetery in Gainesville.
