- "9 miles North of Blakely. James (Uncle Jim) H. Ross house, built by him and sons. Raised horses, 1850-1926. Started first school for blacks in the community, Ross School. (Wife Georgia Aun 1847-1926.) Jack Slaton's maternal gr[and]f[athe]r. House built ca. 1880-1890, burned 1939. Lumber hand-planed, built by hand. Four bedrooms on second floor. Stairs on outside. Peach, fig, pear, mulberry and apple trees. About 1000 A[cres?] of land. Also owned grist mill and blacksmith shop. 9 miles North of Blakely, Hwy 39. Now Kolomoki Plantation. Jas. Ross buried on Jack Slaton's farm. 8 miles, 27N, R[ight] 1/4 mile from highway, second crossr[oa]d, brick h[ou]se. Evergreen AME Church. Go one mile beyond first crossr[oa]d. Huge oak tree. Brick h[ou]se on L[eft]. Just beyond yar, turn R[ight]. Go 1/4 mile to cemetery. West side."--from field notes
