- Description:
- Temple, 1904. Temple Model School, located at the corner of James and Griffin Streets. It grew out of the wish of Ira W. Williams, a Carroll County teacher, to expand the educational opportunities currently offered by traditional schools and to reach more farm children. Construction on the new school began in 1903, and it was completed early in 1904. Mr. Williams was the superintendent. Students could prepare for college, farming, or to teach in small rural schools. At the close of the 1907 term the school returned to a more traditional program. It is said that this school utilized the first transportation system in the state. Mule and horse-drawn wagons with covered tops and side curtains were used to transport children from surrounding areas to the school. See: car131.
