- This collection contains approximately 40 wartime letters written by the Blasingame family, including Confederate soldiers with the 54th Georgia Infantry. Civil War letters originate from the front lines in Richmond, Virginia, and Savannah, Atlanta, Fort Macon, and Marrieta, Georgia. This grouping includes a partly-printed parole for John S. Blasingame out of Macon, 1865, in which Blasingame is sworn under oath not to bear arms against the United States of America, give any information, or do any military duty whatsoever until regularly exchanged as a prisoner of war. Other materials in the collection include family correspondence from 1893-1894 and 1909 and 2 small photographs.
Portions of this collection have been digitized and are available online as part of America's Turning Point: Documenting the Civil War Experience in Georgia.
John S. Blasingame (b. 1836) and John W. Blasingame (b. 1833) were born in Walton County, Georgia. They served in the Civil War as Private in the 54th Infantry Regiment beginning in May 1862. Pension records show John S. was in an Augusta, Georgia hospital with fever at the close of war and John W. was surrendered in 1865 at Greensboro, North Carolina.
America's Turning Point: Documenting the Civil War Experience in Georgia received support from a Digitizing Historical Records grant awarded to the Atlanta History Center, Georgia Historical Society, Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, and the Digital Library of Georgia by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. - External Identifiers:
