- The collection consists of five letters that John McKinney Howell wrote from Andersonville Prison to his wife Emma Berrien Heard. There are also two pages of biographical information. In the letters Howell describes the prisoners and his duties as examining surgeon. He also answers his wife's questions about the number of prisoners (and that there are no female prisoners) and fighting or hanging of prisoners and asks her for family news. Transcripts are included.
