- The collection consists of muster rolls, returns, invoices of stores, and lists of clothing and equipage for Company D of the 137th Colored Infantry Regiment under Captain Charles Hankins and Colonel Martin R. Archer in Macon, Georgia. These post-Civil War records are dated June through December, 1865. Information in these documents includes names of African-American soldiers and clothing and equipment alloted to each.

The Colored Troops Division, an agency of the Adjutant General's office, was organized by War Department General Orders No. 143, dated May 22, 1863. The functions of the office included all matters pertaining to the reruitment, organization and service of African-American troops and officers.
