- The collection consists of a letter from General Joseph Wheeler, dated Headquarters Cavalry Corps, Covington, Georgia, August 8, 1864, to a Confederate Captain. Wheeler states he has heard from Generals Iverson and Allen who are moving toward his position, requests horse shoes to be ready for movement, and states his command has been successful at foraging for food. This letter was written on the eve of Wheeler's Atlanta Raid (Aug. 10 - Sept. 10, 1864).
Cataloged as part of the Georgia Archives and Manuscripts Automated Access Project: A Special Collections Gateway Program of the University Center in Georgia.
Joseph Wheeler was born in 1836 and died in 1906. He was a Confederate Major General in the Civil War. In July of 1863, he commanded all cavalry for the Army of the Mississippi. He commanded U.S. volunteers in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. Wheeler also served during the Civil War and the Philippine Insurrection, and authored several books on military and civil subjects. Wheeler County, in central Georgia, is named in his honor.
